Stride Length

Definition

Stride length is the distance measured between successive heel strikes of the same foot during normal forward walking locomotion.

Detailed Technical Breakdown

In biomechanics, one full stride consists of two individual steps (a left step plus a right step). For general fitness tracking, many pedometers and phone accelerometers use the term 'stride length' to denote single step length. An individual's average walking step length is closely correlated with biological height, typically approximated as height in inches multiplied by 0.413 for females or 0.415 for males.

Key Technical Specifications

  • Average human walking step length: ~2.2 feet (26.4 inches) for females; ~2.5 feet (30 inches) for males.
  • Approximately 2,000 to 2,500 walking steps equal one mile based on height and pace.
  • Calculated accurately by walking 20 steps, measuring total distance in feet, and dividing by 20.
  • Running stride length increases by 25% to 50% compared to walking gait.
